Crossfit, Tough Mudder, and American Ninja Warrior…….

It is happening. After a recent competition in which I was bested by 4 super ninjas, I had an outstanding conversation that spoke to what seemed to be the sudden uprising of physical events and fitness movements that are happening in our country. Now before you throw Captain Negativity my way I am fully aware of the statistics….69% of us are overweight, and of that 69% half are obese…and it’s not getting better, based on history….I know most of us eat wrong, sit wrong, move wrong, or don’t move at all…blah blah, heart disease rates…blah…cancer…etc… I know how inactive our population is and I know that people, that statistically speaking, our children will not fair any better…these are the things that I know…

….but here is what I Believe

.. . I believe we are changing. I believe every time I stand in front of an Beginner’s class at my Box, and tell them why we move the way we move, and why we were meant to be humans that move with POWER, and humans that move GRACEFULLY, and how we should eat, and how we should feel…I believe I can reach down into their very heart and squeeze it with nothing but words of truth…words that speak so much belief into their own hearts that they can’t stand to stay way they have allowed themselves to be… You should feel the joy…not see…FEEL the joy from someone who did today what was impossible for them to do 2 weeks ago….I tell you it is tangible… My goal is to infect my community with this feeling. I want people in Williamsville and then Buffalo to realize how good it feels to be BULLETPROOF…to have a body that is sharp and mobile, to have a mind that is awake and calm, and tolerant….to have joy in simply moving themselves the way humans have moved for the last millennia….these are some of my goals…and check this out…..it’s working……

….people aren’t just watching Crossfit, and Tough Mudders and American Ninja Warrior…they are watching thinking…I can do this….and then they are doing “this”…..and that…that is why I get out of bed at 4 am and leave my beautiful family to come to my second home…and it is why I will continue…to push….

I believe we are changing….I believe our populace is starting to remember what is encoded in our very DNA….I believe we are rediscovering the beautiful simple thing that is the human animal…… why not come….uncover your inner bad ass with all the rest of us….

….why not BELIEVE in yourself..

stay classy Buffalo…..

Reflections and Looking to the Future…..

2013 is all but gone.  2014 is knocking at the door and demanding to come in.  I am welcoming it with open arms.  In 2013 I saw a dream I once had become a reality…I found a version of me that I never knew existed…I welcomed to this world a son… I loved my family deeper than I ever have… I had uncomfortable moments that forced me to grow, almost daily…I discovered compassion where I thought it might not exist… I saw the lives of hundreds change for the positive…I saw a strong community form and begin to thrive… I caught a glimpse of what “my” version of wellness is…. I saw what was, in the beginning, a theory of mine, begin to be proved, over and over again….I learned that what I do truly does matter, and perhaps more importantly the more I help people understand that what they do truly matters the more I will matter.  (that might have been confusing.. a bit)…I learned that the path to success is ever changing, but by gosh it is getting pretty damned close…I realized that it has nothing to do with being perfect, but everything to do with the pursuit of perfection…

What am I looking forward to in 2014???   I am looking forward to becoming a stronger more principle centered father and husband…I can’t wait to outgrow my location and be forced to add new classes at the box….and look to move to a larger location….I will see some of my members become certified and start to spread our version of Crossfit/MovNat, so much so that it will begin to permeate all of Buffalo…and start leaking out….I can’t wait for the guidance and inspiration that will come from the Steve Maxwell seminar in April….I am looking forward to the lives that will be changed by not just me, but by all the members of the Box…we have done so much this year and the honest part of it all is that it will only be amplified in 2014…..I am looking forward to changing 10,000 people’s lives…..looking forward to doing a Burpee Mile…looking forward to back to back bar muscle ups…looking forward to feeling the best  I have ever felt in my entire life….I am going to be honest….I cannot wait until this post next year…….I am looking forward to realizing, 51 weeks from now….that all of this is just the tip of the ICEBERG!!!

Thank you all so much…

Good luck to you all……chase your dreams, live well, move well, and fuel well….have a wonderful New Year’s Eve….and prepare yourself for an Epic 2014!!!!

5 Aspects of Life One Must Conquer to Achieve Fitness Enlightenment

5 Aspects of Life One Must Conquer to Achieve Fitness Enlightenment

We live in a world full of wonderful technology.  I can pick up a phone not much bigger than my business card and be instantly connected with my pen-pal in china, and not see him while we talk, but see him talking back to me.  Long gone are the days of  truly “waiting” for anything.  We live in a society where convenience seems to be the number one focus in our lives.  Everyone everywhere seem to be searching for the easiest, path of least resistance way, to do absolutely everything.  We all want it faster, better, cheaper, and above all else we want it to work.  I think that there is where the problem may first start to rear it’s ugly head.  What else in our wonderful natural world works like that?  We certainly don’t expect to plant a tree and have it fully grown in a day?   As a matter of fact nothing in the natural world works that way.   Everything takes it’s own turn as part of a natural process.  Bugs get it, animals get it, the oceans, clouds, moon and sun all get it…..us humans on the other hand…we are special.  We have been bred by society, religion, media, and even our government to believe that we are special and the rules of the natural world don’t apply to us. We tend to circumvent natural laws as often as possible.  But the fact is, although we may not want to live by them, they very much govern everything we do.  We are not above “natural law.”  For instance, in any population if you introduce an endless supply of food, the population will grow exponentially.  And we think this is a good thing…..look at our ever-expanding waistline  The good news is there is hope out there.  In this post I will outline a very basic approach to 5 aspects of your life that I believe you need to conquer if you hope to achieve fitness enlightenment. (or at the very least reach you fitness goals)

ASPECT # 1   ATTITUDE:   It’s hard to type briefly on this one (or any of the others for that matter) subject, but I will do my best. But first perhaps I’ll let some that have a bit more life experience under their bit do some talking for me:

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.
Winston Churchill

It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come.
Dalai Lama

Success or failure depends more upon attitude than upon capacity successful men act as though they have accomplished or are enjoying something. Soon it becomes a reality. Act, look, feel successful, conduct yourself accordingly, and you will be amazed at the positive results.
William James

….so after reading such quotes you may naturally ask:  OK, what now?  Well you asked for it.  You have to become aware of your attitude toward you.  Sounds a bit redundant right?  But it’s not.  You, right now, are exactly where you are supposed to be.  You are a direct result of all the beliefs, choices, and events that have led you here.  You can change that.  What you can do is choose to change the direction you are heading.  Look inside yourself.  Listen to the way you talk to yourself about how you look, how you feel, how you eat, how you dream, how you act.  You have to find and identify an negative self talk…any thoughts that allow you to …eat that cheeseburger, or skip that workout, or put off joining that gym this week.  Simply…you attitude toward exercising and eating has put you exactly where you are today.  If you want to be in better shape, the first thing you need to do is decide to be in better shape.

ASPECT #2  ENVIRONMENT:  This refers to everything around you.  Friends, Family, living conditions, work, television, the country, our media…..all of it….if you open your eyes right now and look,,,,,what you see is your environment…..and unfortunately……it’s not pretty.   If you are a fit person in the United States of America you are on the extreme end of the spectrum.   As a matter of fact, we are pushing to the %70 mark in the US.   Seventy Percent of us are either overweight or obese….and for our children the percentage has tripled in the past 15 years.   That means if you open your eyes and ears to what society is screaming at you……if you listen to what the majority of commercials tell you, or what your friends at work say…you will stay the exact same way that you are.  The only way you are going to change is if you turn your boat around and start pedaling against the flow.

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
Mark Twain

I may take Mr. Twain’s quote and go a bit further…in terms of fitness and nutrition…..instead of pausing and reflecting…I recommend you  run like hell in the other direction….The bottom line is you, as a human being, are going to act, think, reflect, the values of the environment that you are in.  So…to change your life, change your environment.   More on that in the week, book, years to come.   Perhaps the biggest point to walk away from today, in regards to environment, is do not underestimate how important it is to be aware of how it can either enhance, or can crush your attempts to get/ stay in shape.

ASPECT # 3 TIME MANAGEMENT:   I’ll begin by saying this.  I am a father of two, a husband of one, have a full time job, run a business, and teach group exercises classes at a local gym.   Impossible to just accidentally accomplish everything that I have to accomplish everyday.  If I can find the time to train for a marathon…you can find 3o mins a day to get you to your fitness goal.   The bottom line is that you have to plan for it though.  Trust me on this.  No one has ever accidentally got in shape.  ”My goodness….I woke up the other day and out of nowhere, I had a six pack of abs and I could run a mile in under five minutes”   Trust me  this doesn’t happen.   What has to happen if you expect to get in shape is you have to make time for it in your schedule….and it has to take priority.  The said truth is most americans take better care of their cars than they do their bodies……here is a time management page stolen directly from a Sales Mentor of mine Chet Holmes:

Commit to these six steps
Six proactive steps to time management can transform your day. They take five minutes to do and can double the amount of results you get daily. The problem is not whether or not these steps will work, because they will absolutely work. The problem is whether or not you will fully commit to doing them, repeatedly.
The key to time management is commitment to the following six steps:
Step One: Touch it once
How often do you pick up something on your desk and say, “I have to take care of this, but I can’t deal with it right now”? If you do that a few times per day with a few different documents/projects/tasks, by the end of the year, you will have spent an entire month touching and rereading information without taking action. So, if you touch it, move it to the next step.
If you want to see how often you waste time, each time you pick up something, put a red dot on it. After you have three red dots on a piece of paper, you begin to feel pressure to do something and move on. If you touch it, take care of it.
Step Two: Make lists, but stick to the six most important things
When we conduct this time management seminar, we ask how many people in the audience make lists. Practically everyone does. People often have lists with 25 to as many as 40 items on them. They are proud that their lists are so long and that they are so busy.
Further investigation quickly shows them that long lists are the perfect way to be busy, but not productive. When you have a long list, your energy is focused more on trimming the list than it is on being productive. Each day, pick the six items that will produce the highest level of results, put them on your list, and finish all six things by day’s end.
Step Three: Plan how long you will spend on each item
You’ve started your day by making a list of the six most important things. That took two or three minutes. Now take another minute to plan how long each item will take or how long you will dedicate to the items that are ongoing.
When we conduct this workshop, the people with long lists usually find that they can have an incredibly productive day with only six hours spent on their six key items. Most people who use these steps find they get more important work done in less time because their time is focused on the most productive tasks.
Step Four: Plan when
Now that you know how much time to dedicate to each task, you need to plan when you will do them. In addition, you must build in time for the reactive mode.
For example, if you are a sales manager interrupted by frequent “got a minute” meetings, plan a fixed time when you will accept those types of meetings. Otherwise, unless it is an emergency, do not allow people to come to your desk and ask if you’ve got a minute!
Think of any top executive you know. Can you simply call them up, or do you have to schedule time with them? Many top executives plan their day down to the minute. Everything is done according to a schedule, including time for “got a minute” meetings. Scheduling time is the key to time management.
Step Five: Ask the results
Few people are highly productive. People like to have items on a list, so they can cross off the items. But that’s not enough. The things that produce the best results are generally the most difficult. Thus, they get left off of the list or are scheduled at the end of the day, causing them to get bumped to the next day…and the next…and the next.
Schedule important tasks in the beginning of your day. Cold calling or trying to get appointments with key prospects or clients are the things that produce the best results. However, they often get pushed off by average salespeople. After you make your list, ask yourself if the items on it are the ones that will produce the most results.
Step Six: Will it hurt me to throw this away?
Of all filed information, 80% is never referred to again. After hearing this time management idea, I began to throw away four out of five of the items I used to keep. It’s been 10 years, and I cannot think of a single time where it has hurt me
Using those steps should help with not only work, but also may get us in the proper mindset of planning out our lives, not to mention our workouts.
ASPECT #4  NUTRITION:    I’m going to make this one simple.Eat none of the following:

  • Grains–including bread, pasta, noodles
  • Beans–including string beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, peas
  • Potatoes
  • Dairy products
  • Sugar
From here on…now you are wondering what you can eat right??????
  • Meat, chicken, and fish
  • Eggs
  • Fruit–especially berries
  • Vegetables–especially root vegetables, but not potatoes or sweet potatoes
  • Nuts–almonds, macadamias, walnuts, brazil nuts. Do not eat peanuts.
There…if you are wondering why…the why is for another time…for now…there it is….simple and to the point…take it or leave it..
ASPECT #5  MOVEMENT:  It’s listed last, because in my experience, it is the least important.  If the other four are aligned correctly  then number five simply falls naturally into place.  If you have the right attitude, are surrounded by the right environment, have planned out and organized your life, and are eating the way you were designed to, you workouts not only will work, but they will be part of your life, which is the point.  We, as a species, are meant to move.  We are mobile beings.  We are not supposed to spend 8-10 hours of our day sitting on our asses…..I think that there is a very primal reason that no matter how hard you workout, afterwards there is a very good feeling.  So I care not what you do to workout.  Sure I would like you to do some sort of functional, crossfit like workout that would incorporate basic movements, and would ultimately lead you to feeling better, looking better, and moving better.  Truth be told though, let’s at first work on consistency.  Step 1, in Movement is to   MOVE!!!!!  Spend 30-45 minutes everyday doing something that makes you sweat,,,,from there we will talk again……
In summary….if you can master those 5 simple concepts I firmly believe you will be successful, not only in your fitness endeavors but in life as well.
thanks for your time Buffalo..

The reality of eating/ being healthy,,,,,and words of encouragement.

…..eating the “right” way is different for everyone……is a popular sentiment among some of the most knowledgeable fitness, health, and nutrition professionals.  And if you get right down to it, purely speaking, different foods will do slightly different things in certain people…I can agree with that.  But the problem is that when the general public reads a statement like that….they take it as a license to mean that ….Hey that could mean that me having a Big Mac, fries, and shake once a week is not a bad thing…..right?   …..umm…Wrong.

All things in moderation…

Look at where all things in moderation has gotten us.  We are, not even moderately, the fattest country in the world.  And it boggles my mind that people would rather seek salvation in a pill instead of taking the time out of their day to eat food that started as food in the first place…

Just had an outstanding lunch with a like minded friend and he recounted a story of a recent stay at a resort in Costa Rica……I will paraphrase….he said it was a wonderful “resort”…five rooms only, 15 staff there to wait on you hand and foot…he said one morning he ordered a smoothie….the ingredients of which where then cut down and put in the blender…how awesome is that…it reminds me of my Great Granny Harris showing me which chicken we were going to eat for dinner that night…..awesome….(maybe disturbing at that age..lol)

All things in addiction….

that’s probably closer to how it should read.  Here is the rub.  If you eat bread/ pasta/ rice/ coke/ ice cream…..etc..on a regular basis…you are addicted to sugar…..it is what it is……if you do not believe go for a day without any grains/ alcohol/ sugar/ pasta/ ….and see how you are feeling..take it to two or three days….trust me, after 30 days straight…you won’t crave it anymore…though it may feel like hell to make it to that point….

So you’re saying I’m not allowed to eat anything good anymore?????

first off, because you are addicted to something doesn’t make it good.  Just because it tastes great doesn’t make it good…..let’s look at what it does when you put it into your body…that will determine whether it is good for you or not.  Let’s at least agree on that..

But it’s ok if I have a little cheat day….isn’t it?

Well how is that working out for you thus far????  Let’s put it this way …if your goal is to look at function like Jessica Biel and you look and function like Jessica Biel then go ahead and have your cheat day….probably not going to put you out too badly…but if you are 60lbs over weight, and move more like ET….then you have no business having a cheat day…you have had a cheat life thus far..no reason to put an exclamation point on it.

But I can’t eat healthy all the time….

Can’t never could do nothing…….I’m not asking that you eat healthy all the time…just try it for the next week, two weeks, month…the beautiful part of eating well/ right…is that once you get into it..you won’t want to go back….

How do I get started?

Surround yourselves with like minded people, and/ or information….read blogs about it, read books about it, subscribe to newsletters, watch documentaries (netflix…waddup?)  Educate yourself…just like anything if you wanna be good at something you have to learn about it.  Once you begin to immerse yourself in it, you’ll find it’s not that difficult..there are plenty of great people around to help you on your journey…and by gosh your slimming waste line and heart will love you to life for it.

Fueling yourself is so important, I go as far to tell the members of my Box that it doesn’t matter how hard you work the 60 minutes that you are in here with me if you go out and throw away the other 23 hours you have left in your day….what a shame to work so hard….and see no return….

Best news of all?

you can find thousands of people…in Buffalo alone…that are wanting to experience, or have experienced, or will share with you, help you…guide you…or even take the trip along side you….the way we as a community are going to change…and fight the Obesity epidemic that is infecting our country is at this very grass roots level.  Our Government will not solve it…..it’s not their responsibility anyhow…they have lobbyists to cater to…..take charge of your life…..eat healthy, train hard…and infect those around you with the zest for life that you will gain from it…

thanks Buffalo and beyond..

Courage (retooled from my other blog)

I thought this one might be worth putting in front of your faces one more time…give it a reread.

Doing the right thing in the face of adversity.  Willingly putting yourself out there, even though your viewpoint may be vastly different than the majority.  Some people thrive under those conditions.  Some willingly subject themselves to criticism from the masses.  Some would not have it any other way.

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to reform (or
pause and reflect).   -Twain

I fancy myself, at times, to be on the less occupied side of the fence more often than not, but I know most aren’t.  I know that most are content to be a quiet face in the crowd.  To move about completely unheard, and completely safe, and completely comfortable.  Most of us like the anonymity.  We like it.  But I think perhaps…..just maybe….somewhere hidden, deep down inside…..past those memories of getting stuffed in the locker in 4th grade, way inside…… I think that the vast majority of us somehow want to be in the spotlight.  I think somewhere in all of us we wish we could shout out the way we feel, the way we think, the truth of what our heart screams at us.  Yet….we don’t.   We continue on, living how we are “supposed” to, or how our fear allows us to.  I could be very wrong.  Perhaps everyone lives each day at the top of their game.  Rolling through their lives like an unstoppable force….chowing down on Big Mac’s and six packs and loving their life.  That’s probably closer to the truth.  Maybe society is content to eat what they want, and live on manufactured food and drugs until they die at 76 years old, happy simply to have existed for that long.  Well if that is you then you may want to stop reading a blog titled Fighting to Be Fit.  I’m going to, for the sake of my intended audience, lean to the side of hoping that most of you are wanting something better, looking for it…wondering why you haven’t found it inside your globo gym, or your curves, or your weight watchers or your Jenny Craig, wondering why Shawn T can’t give it to you or why your experience at P90X was more like p90F  (as in Fail).   This post is for you……I’m going to let you in on a secret…….A fitness secret that Jillian Michaels doesn’t want you do know and a nutrition secret that Subway hopes you never find out…….in truth….the only Gym equipment you will ever need you were born with…(your body)……and the only nutrition advice you need is to eat real food and stay away from sugar as much as you can……if you were to stick with that you’d do pretty well.   What exactly does that mean?????  It means that there are plenty of people “working out” in Gym’s across america, using every piece of equipment for hours at a time, that can’t run a mile, do a proper pushup, or a body squat, or even hold on to the pullup bar, not to mention do a pull up.  Likewise there are millions of people that pay nutritionists and or personal trainers to give them nutrition advice that they already know……  Sugar-Bad….Wheat-Bad……pasta-bad……Soda-bad…..candy-bad…..ice cream- bad….beer-bad…….Veggies-Good….nuts-good…..fruit-good……. and when I tell people things like this they always want to say…..but can’t I have ice cream every once in a while….all things in moderation right??? and to that I say….if that works for you roll with it……but the truth is that until you get out from underneath your very real addiction to carbohydrates…then nothing I tell you about food is going to matter….and until you get out of the mindset that I need to do chest and tris on monday, back and bis on wednesday, and legs and shoulders on friday…..no amount of my functional kettlebell workouts are going to work for you….especially if you are spending 45 minutes on an ellyptical reading a magazine and then convincing yourself that you are in the “fat burning zone”……..but again…I’m hoping that the majority of you out there are in search of a better way.  I’m not going to call it the right way because I’m not that naive,  but it’s definitely a better way.  Eating a plant-based whole foods diet is simply a better way…..incorporating full body, compound muscular movements and body weight exercises is simply better than spot targeting secondary movers….Drinking Water will always be better than drinking anything else….  So for all of you that aren’t happy, that aren’t content, that demand a different way….have the Courage to believe there is a better way, have the Courage to find it…..Good luck all

Nutrition…How to eat well..

I have long been wanting to post on this subject. I’ve reread my past posts on my other blogs that spoke of nutrition  and must admit that, as heart felt as they are, they fell short of their intended impact.  How does one reach out to a populace that only responds to answers they want not answers they need?  How do I craft an article so compelling that those reading it won’t simply say “Yeah he’s right, but I’m not going to give up pasta” but instead might actually give it up for 90 days, and see how much better they feel.  People don’t really want to acknowledge that there are really only two ways to eat.  There is simply eating the way that nourishes our body or the way that poisons it.  Period.  How have we come so far from where our distant ancestors were 10,000 years ago.  I mean how crazy is it that we live in a society where our food sources are so jacked up that we need people with advanced degrees to legally prepare a “diet” for us?  Really?  I can sum up how you should eat right now.  Organic: meat, veggies, little to no starches, nuts and seeds, and a bit of fruit.   Wait a sec Rob, you don’t have any grains on that list?    No, no I don’t.  Sugar isn’t there either.  “But I have to have my sugar” Umm.. actually no, no you don’t…actually out of the three macronutrients (fat, proteins, carbohydrates)  Carbs are the only one for which there is no dietary requirement.  That means if you provide yourself with fat and protein your body can make all the carbs it needs to function optimally. What qualifies me to make this statement?  Do I have a degree in nutrition?  Am I a Registered Dietician?   No, and hell no….. to be that I would have to believe that you need to eat whole grains.  Here is what I do know.  I have never felt, looked, or moved better than I do right now, and it has been over a year since I’ve eaten grains or sugar.  I’m leaner, happier, have much longer bouts of energy, have lower blood pressure and let’s get this one out of the way, the majority of my diet is fat…..wow….is that possible…..it is.   But I will tell you this, I don’t eat things that come in a box, or that have words in them that I cannot pronounce.  And I feel super good about it.   So in closing be willing to look at our history, look at how our waistlines have grown steadily since the agricultural revolution started, look at how our fertility rates have dropped, how our average height and strength has waned…..you would think with all the great commercials about how healthy eating grains are, and the fact that the vast majority of our american diet is based on it, that we in fact, should be the healthiest nation in the world…right?  At any rate I feel I’m starting to go on a bit too far.  Keep this in mind.  If you are interested in learning more, I’d love to sit and have a conversation about this with you.  You can reach me any time during the day at the box, 716.560.7438…..or stop in and visit.  Let’s keep this in mind.  Exercising without eating properly is putting the cart before the horse…

stay healthy buffalo

a story….of sorts

A general manager and a personal trainer have a conversation, one of many, about how if “they” owned a gym  they would do so many things differently.   “Cleaner, better equipment, personalized service by the front desk staff” the general manager said.  “Space, look at all the space in here taken up by all the machines.  Imagine the things we could have the members do if there weren’t so many machines” the trainer pointed out.  They both agreed that on their own, they would do it much differently, much better in their minds.  The personal trainer, in spite of how naive he is, looks out at the main floor.  Something isn’t right about that, that can’t be all there is to “working out”.   His search began then.  He didn’t really know what he was looking for.  But he knew something better.  He found Kettlebells, He found Gym Jones, he found this amazing trend that was basically un heard of back then Crossfit?  Isn’t that where you jerk around like an idiot on the pull-up bars, convulsing until you get your chin over the bar??? That was what someone asked him back then.  You can’t do pullups like that you’ll hurt your back and shoulders, it’s terrible for you. Those were the words of someone he looked up to.  But something in it all made sense. It made sense when you took the exercise away and made it a task.  What task?  Get your chin over the bar as many times as you can.  How you do that, doesn’t matter, go.    CONSTANTLY VARIED….Never the same workout twice……even when you did repeat a workout it was so long since the last time, you had improved so much that it really wasn’t the same workout.  FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS … workout ways that your body was meant to move, deadlifts, squats, jumps, running, pull ups…so simple……so basic……..so necessary..HIGH INTENSITY  After all it’s called work for a reason.  Most of these workouts lasted less than 20 minutes…is that possible?  After being fed a steady diet of body part isolation workouts, and cardio for 45 minutes 5 days a week, how are people going to believe that 5 20 minute workouts will do them worlds better????  After all isn’t longer better.   In fact, no.  Then the personal trainer found himself at a crossroads.  He had two outstanding offers in front of him.  He was blessed by being a fairly decent martial artist and had found someone who believed in him enough to offer him a chance to manage a school, and become part of  a very successful world class system.  The other offer was a GM spot at an up and coming franchise, new to the Buffalo Area, open one, the part owner of the next, etc….at least 5 here the offerer had insisted.  He turned down the latter in favor of the former more familiar in terms of people he knew and trusted.  Over the next 6 years the naive personal trainer learned a lot, grew more than even he expected, and was proud to call himself a martial artist.  (a title he still isn’t entirely comfortable with)  He learned humility, training every day next to martial artists whose skills he was in awe of.  Trained how to teach by a teacher who was world renowned, and truly personified the word Grandmaster….Introduced to a system that for the most part emphasized truly caring about the client, and providing them with not only the highest quality instruction but also the most complete customer service experience in the market.  It succeeded.  But the personal trainer grew restless.  He loved the martial arts, but was not passionate about what he taught.  He longed for a place of his own.  Where he could again connect with the goals inside of him.  What was it.  What unified the jobs he’d done.  What part of them did he enjoy the most?  Selling cars, teaching Tae Kwon Do, personal training?  It was seeing the joy in people’s faces when they accomplished something they didn’t believe they could.  That realization.  It was awesome to him.  To be able to be a small part of their success.

It is from this place the Crossfit Williamsville was built.  It does not claim to be the  “be all and end all to exercise.”  What it claims to be is… Honest….hard working…..and ever learning…..and above all else…caring for the needs of the community that it will build.   Come visit the naive personal trainer sometime and see if you like the workout, the atmosphere, and the people.    All are welcome.

take care buffalo, best of health to you all
