Bravery….

Bravery…..
As always I feel compelled to compose something one way, and then after a lengthy discussion with my wife, I find myself centered, and feeling like something else should be said. I was all set to approach a post like this, ranting a raving on about how we are all destined to live a life like those in the movie Wall-e, floating around on hover chairs and living fun stuff through virtual reality….that was my pessimistic view of where society was heading. Then she said to me. “Rob, (as she calls me when she isn’t angry), it’s funny how opposite we are? (I didn’t follow) She went on to explain that on a day to day basis, she is normally more of the pessimist whereas I am the bubbly optimist who thinks he can accomplish anything, but then, whenever we speak of the future on a grand scale, nationally, or globally for instance, I fall into the 0 hope for the human race, and she sees the brighter future….interesting, and of course….naturally, she is right…..(PhD…..) She said something that made entirely too much sense not to post. I will of course be paraphrasing, and interjecting, but the main points of this post come from her supremely educated mind. As she looked at the nation, monsanto be damned, she realized that when we were growing up no one was even questioning how healthy eating bread was, no alternative fitness crazes were taking the nation by storm, there was not a huge movement for eating real food. But now it seems to be everywhere. In her mind we are moving in the right direction, I might say we are crawling that way, but at least we are moving. So what will it take to move faster…..I think it will take a bit of what I titled this post.

brave/brāv/
Adjective:
Ready to face and endure danger or pain; showing courage.
Noun:
People who are ready to face and endure danger or pain.
Verb:
Endure or face (unpleasant conditions or behavior) without showing fear: “we had to brave the heat”.
SYNOPSIS
So, there it is plainly written, hard to argue with definitions so concisely stated. What will it take to change the country, and move us toward this place of health and fitness enlightenment. Enough people who are willing to face danger…willing to speak out against things that they see are wrong….enough people willing to say that I have had enough…..enough people willing to give a damn. To get out of their lazy boys and prioritize their health and well being over watching the damn football game on Sunday…will this ever happen??? I hope so, with all my being I hope so. I’m doing my best. I’m giving my children and example to follow. I’ll invite all of you to do that to try your best to model what you see to be the right way. Hell, just give a damn about yourselves and your future, more so that what shows are on the idiot box tonight. That may be a challenge worth repeating. If you care more about who is getting voted off of the Bachelorette tonight (sorry, who isn’t getting a rose) care about what you are going to eat tomorrow, or how you are going to fit a workout in during your lunch hour. Try to start prioritizing your health first, rather than labelling it as an inconvenience that you “plan” to get around to tomorrow.. really if you have any questions nutrition related, or even exercise related I’d be happy to meet with, and or do a phone consultation….here it is in easy print,,,,do something that makes you sweat really hard 20-25 minutes 5-7 days a week and eat real food…..if you stick to that you needn’t count calories, or worry about how much weight you are lifting….once you get those two down to 90 percent of the time then we can move forward from there…good luck Buffalo and beyond…and please don’t be afraid to take the leap..

Crossfit, Tough Mudder, and American Ninja Warrior…….

It is happening. After a recent competition in which I was bested by 4 super ninjas, I had an outstanding conversation that spoke to what seemed to be the sudden uprising of physical events and fitness movements that are happening in our country. Now before you throw Captain Negativity my way I am fully aware of the statistics….69% of us are overweight, and of that 69% half are obese…and it’s not getting better, based on history….I know most of us eat wrong, sit wrong, move wrong, or don’t move at all…blah blah, heart disease rates…blah…cancer…etc… I know how inactive our population is and I know that people, that statistically speaking, our children will not fair any better…these are the things that I know…

….but here is what I Believe

.. . I believe we are changing. I believe every time I stand in front of an Beginner’s class at my Box, and tell them why we move the way we move, and why we were meant to be humans that move with POWER, and humans that move GRACEFULLY, and how we should eat, and how we should feel…I believe I can reach down into their very heart and squeeze it with nothing but words of truth…words that speak so much belief into their own hearts that they can’t stand to stay way they have allowed themselves to be… You should feel the joy…not see…FEEL the joy from someone who did today what was impossible for them to do 2 weeks ago….I tell you it is tangible… My goal is to infect my community with this feeling. I want people in Williamsville and then Buffalo to realize how good it feels to be BULLETPROOF…to have a body that is sharp and mobile, to have a mind that is awake and calm, and tolerant….to have joy in simply moving themselves the way humans have moved for the last millennia….these are some of my goals…and check this out…..it’s working……

….people aren’t just watching Crossfit, and Tough Mudders and American Ninja Warrior…they are watching thinking…I can do this….and then they are doing “this”…..and that…that is why I get out of bed at 4 am and leave my beautiful family to come to my second home…and it is why I will continue…to push….

I believe we are changing….I believe our populace is starting to remember what is encoded in our very DNA….I believe we are rediscovering the beautiful simple thing that is the human animal…… why not come….uncover your inner bad ass with all the rest of us….

….why not BELIEVE in yourself..

stay classy Buffalo…..

Do something….

“I want to lose weight”

“I want to quit smoking”

“I want to feel better”

“That Asshole cut me off and ruined my morning”

“I want to stay in bed longer”

“I want to get smashed tonight”

“I want it to be Friday…”

There lies inside us all the seed of something great.  An idea, a dream, an action, a thought, a hope, a love…..I believe that.   I will believe that forever.  I will do my best to find that in everyone I meet and have the honor of coaching, or even have the honor of having their ear for just the briefest of moments.  We live in a society that is begging to be moved, and begging to move.  I could be looking at the world through fitness colored glasses, perhaps I am naive to believe that movement and nutrition could fix many of the problems that we face on a day to day basis….doesn’t matter, naive or not, I am going to go on believing it.  As a matter of fact I can’t tell you the number of lives I have changed simply teaching people how to move, and what to put in their bellies.  Everything from promotions at work, to life long ailments no longer hurting, to vastly improved sex lives, not to mention general disposition changes and more positive outlooks on life….to me movement and nutrition are Life….without either of them you do not have life….

This past weekend I was honored to be a part of Buffalo’s first Ninja Warrior Competition (shout out to Patrick Hall of Hybrid Fitness…check it out downtown Buffalo!!!)   Where I and 47 other high speed Ninjas took on a wicked course..and had tons of fun….it was outstanding…and the support was amazing….hundreds came to watch.  My hope, as I hope was Patrick’s intention, was not that I or my fellow competitors got a moment to be glorified…..my hope is that a ton of those “watchers” had a moment where they thought….  “I can do this”   The obstacle course was great..but the idea of motivating 150 people to push through their own comfort levels and decide, because of one Sunday afternoon of inspiration, that they are now going to do “something.”  That jazzes me up.   That is what wakes me up at 4 am every morning….that is what drives me…this insatiable hunger to show Buffalo and the whole damned country that the idea of  FIT, or getting FIt could not be more clear than it is today…move often and move well, and fuel yourself well……get over it. . If you are looking at that statement and thinking it is more complicated then you are wrong….move move move, and eat to support your movement not to support your hidden inner angst…..

With that being said I have developed a cure all for what I like to call Lazyitis….  I have doctor friends who tell me this is a terrible condition that is sweeping the nation…

Tips to becoming a Bullet Proof Ninja    (clearly I am assuming you want to be one…..who wouldn’t ?)

that’s all for now

Movement..

By far this post will not be the definitive work on movement that the subject in fact demands…or rather perhaps should demand. CrossFit Williamsville and MovNat Buffalo has been running as one in the same for 18months now and I can say that I have learned so much.  So much.  18 months ago when I spoke on the subject of movement, or programming, or nutrition, or how to inspire someone to change their lives, or how to push someone to become better….back then I was standing on the shoulders of giants and hoping that the way I combined proven methods would ultimately work.  I knew in my heart that what I was doing worked.  I had read accounts (numerous accounts) of similar methods working…..and above all I had a belief that I could make it work.  Moving my body through space has always made sense to me.  Always.  I was fortunate  to have at my disposal access to wooded areas, and even when my  family moved to Ohio, and I was even farther away from my Grandparents Farm, I was fortunate to have grown up long enough ago that as an 8 year old I rode my bike far enough away from the neighborhoods of Troy Ohio, and found my own wooded playgrounds.  To this day there is no time that I feel more free than when I am running through the woods..playing to my hearts content..

..So  after 18months of teaching and coaching people how to move better..how would I describe what I do?

The answer is so much easier or rather simpler than some might expect.  I don’t really “do” anything.  It’s what I undo that makes the difference.  It is in fact the single most important thing I can give to my members.  I  strive to undo the years of eating badly, the hours of chronic sitting……I undo the stress of paying the bills….I undo the negativity that has been force fed to them their whole lives.  Imagine an environment built on solid principles…an environment that is encouraging, enlightening, and is one in which you are not judged by what you do….but how you do it, and ultimately as long as you try your best in this environment then success is the only possible outcome.   Can you imagine what that looks like.  Can you imagine how good it would feel to be there, to train there, to hang out with people that came there for darn near the same reasons that you walked in the door.   I can imagine it.  In fact I need not imagine it.  It has been created.  I coach there almost every day.

What is fitness?  To Crossfit fitness is measurable, trackable, and through this science of fitness you can gain fitness, and ultimately use it to destroy your opponents in a given show of fitness. ( one in which the parameters are unknown, thus keeping you on your toes and proving how complete someone’s fitness regimen is).   I understand completely the idea of  Increasing one’s work capacity over broad time and modal domains, and agree that this could be a measure of their fitness.  But I wonder how efficient this is in terms of long term work capacity.   What I am saying is that if you work so diligently hard at increasing your fitness to the caliber of top level Games athletes, or Olympic Athletes, or NFL stars…..is that really the proper way to ensure that 25 years from now you will be able to run around in the yard with your grandkids?

I think not.

I think what works for the long term is moving our bodies as often as possible.  Having a very real awareness that never sitting in a chair again could be one of the healthiest decisions you could ever make.  I think that learning how our body should move, then learning how it can move, and the pushing it to move faster, stronger, more flexible, longer…etc can be fantastic.  But it is all rooted in the first part.  We have to relearn how our body should move.  Watch a 3 year old run jump and immerse herself in play and tell me that there is not a part you (perhaps a big part) that envies her movement.  We have to reconnect with how we first moved.  How we crawled, ran, jumped, climbed, carried things…these basic, even primal movement patterns are what created this amazing human animal that we have hiding inside us.  We just have to let it out.

…..I think for right now I will leave this here with more to reflect on..and much more to write.  For now I hope this gave a little window into how I feel about movement…

think of this as a movement thought snack……

What is the Secret?

In a word….Consistency.

Bruce Jenner in his “pre” Kardashian days, when he was legitimately one of the fittest people on earth, was asked about how he stays so focused as a decathlete ( think 1980s)…and his answer was incredibly simple yet if applied properly could be the key to you reaching any goal in life you might have, be it physical, mental, or even monetary.  He said that whenever he was faced with a decision he simply chose the route that would get him closer to his goal, rather than the one that would take him further away.

39

Imagine that…take the route that will get you closer to where you want to be……can it be that simple..  I believe it can.

But perhaps, for those of us wanting to improve our health, what is missing from us certainly wasn’t missing from Bruce.  He knew his times, knew his training, knew without a shadow of a doubt specifically what he wanted.  So he took massive action and made it happen.

So perhaps before we can become consistent with our actions, so that we can drive ourselves toward our goal, we have to find out what that goal is.

Homework assignment:

1. Write down a specific goal.

1a. then write down a goal that has nothing to do with Weight…   example, wear this size dress, run a 5k,  do 5 consecutive pull-ups.

2. Write down everything you can remember, that you have done over the past week that has taken you further from reaching that goal.

3.  Write down that you are not going to do that stuff, any more.

4.  Write down 5 things you can do, today, tomorrow, and this whole coming week to get you closer to your goal in 1a.

5.  Post on here in the replies, or even on FB what you have written, and then you will have a built in accountability company..

Good luck…this is a take action and apply it post….

if you consistently stick to this simple plan that you have developed, I believe you will be quite happy with the results..

Hope for the future and those around us… simple slight rehash of an older post…..relevant nonetheless

I am luckier than most. I have completely designed my lifestyle around fitness. I have to be in shape or it is impossible for me to do my job correctly. So that means it is easy for me to exercise consistently right…..??? It’s super easy for me to eat healthy….right??? I suppose to an extent it is true. But I think what’s important is to understand how long it took me to get to this level. I think it’s too often that people see someone who has made it to a certain level of fitness and they may think….oh he has good genetics…or wow she probably doesn’t even like chocolate. Take me for example; When I was freshman in high school, baseball first introduced me to the “weight room” from that moment on I always “wanted” a six pack, and veins in my arms….well fast forward 20 years later …and finally I have them…..but it did not happen overnight….I wish I could stress that, I wish I could have you all standing on my shoulders as I eyed a piece of candy, that I knew would only lead to more and more candy…..and feel how  I struggled to not eat it.  I wish you could visualize the back and forth battle it was…..”I can eat just that….it’s not a big deal”….vs “don’t touch that, look at how far you have come”….constant, relentless fight…..let me just fall of a track a second and say….sugar addiction sucks, but breaking sucks even more in the short term..lol….20 years it has taken me to undo what society, and my family put into me in the first 13 years of my life. Actually I once read a study that suggested that by 7 our eating habits are already firmly in place…that’s how early this starts. No wonder it took me 20 years to undo what was so firmly embedded in my mind… So why bring this up….I suppose because I want you to believe that it’s possible to be in whatever sort of shape you would like to be in, but you have to make the effort. You have to take on the responsibility….if you don’t do it for yourself you likely will never do it. Perhaps the only other “person” you may be able to get away with would be doing it for your children…..wouldn’t you like to be able to lift and play with their children (your own grandkids) one day? Ask yourself how likely is that scenario at the rate you are headed…and let’s pretend you who are reading this are doing fine with your health, as I anticipate plenty of you will be…then what about someone you know who isn’t going to be ok in 5 years, 10 years….what can you do today to help that person. Who can you put them in touch with to help change their life for the better? Do we, who are healthy and fit, owe it to the rest of society to help them get out of the rut they are in…to help show them how to be healthier,,,,and ultimately happier??? What do you think? Either that or live inside our Fit little box, with our fit little friends and watch Americas average waistline continue to grow….that is what is happening…how do we stop it…maybe you ask do we stop it?? Or do we act like a New Yorker…and look straight ahead and pay no attention to those hurting around us. I once posted that letting someone who is obese eat at a fast food restaurant is similar in my mind to allowing an alcoholic to have a shot a whiskey….that post offended some people…though I’m not really sure why. …I believe until we as a country are prepared to have these uncomfortable moments and recognize the nationwide epedemic for what it is…then I believe we will never begin to move in the right direction….at any rate it’s been a while buffalo…talk to you all soon..

Motivation?

It is the New Year.

My wish for all of you is to take charge of yourself and realize, truly realize that you can accomplish all you want and more, and understand how awesome it is that you have the power, in you, to do it.

There are times when this world will knock you down.  It will drop you on your ass.  It will leave you wishing that  you hadn’t even bothered to get out of bed that day…  And then it will hit you again.  That’s the way it is.  Accept it…but know that you were built to handle it.

I have seen people endure the unthinkable and rise above it….never looking back.  History is littered with these stories.  Stories of forgotten souls that were beaten to within an inch of their life, and for some reason they continued to press on and ultimately attained a level of success that literally changed the way the world funcitoned.  I won’t list examples…you can find hundreds on google. In fact I might argue that most of the people you see that have “made” it, have suffered at one time or another and then rose above it, and if that is true, then why would your road to success be any different.  That’s a comforting thought isn’t it?

Whether your goals for 2014 are health, relationship, or financially motivated (perhaps all of the above).  Know that they are within your reach.  Know that you are capable right now.   Know that you have within you all the knowledge, confidence, energy, intelligence, and motivation to make them happen.  You simply have to decide.  Pick who, or how, or what it is that you want, or want to become and decide right now.  Write it down so you can see it every single day…look at that paper when you wake up in the morning and let it be the thing that puts you to bed every night.  Create an intense burning desire around achieving it.   See yourself in that car, with that body, talking with the love of your life….see it so clearly that there is no other option for your mind except to make that happen…..COMMIT.

Do not let this year pass you by with forgotten resolutions, dismissed goals, dreams that have been laughed out of existence.    Take hold of your future and make damned sure that in January of 2015 a very different “YOU” will be reading this blog….

Good Luck Buffalo and beyond…

Stay Classy….

Reflections and Looking to the Future…..

2013 is all but gone.  2014 is knocking at the door and demanding to come in.  I am welcoming it with open arms.  In 2013 I saw a dream I once had become a reality…I found a version of me that I never knew existed…I welcomed to this world a son… I loved my family deeper than I ever have… I had uncomfortable moments that forced me to grow, almost daily…I discovered compassion where I thought it might not exist… I saw the lives of hundreds change for the positive…I saw a strong community form and begin to thrive… I caught a glimpse of what “my” version of wellness is…. I saw what was, in the beginning, a theory of mine, begin to be proved, over and over again….I learned that what I do truly does matter, and perhaps more importantly the more I help people understand that what they do truly matters the more I will matter.  (that might have been confusing.. a bit)…I learned that the path to success is ever changing, but by gosh it is getting pretty damned close…I realized that it has nothing to do with being perfect, but everything to do with the pursuit of perfection…

What am I looking forward to in 2014???   I am looking forward to becoming a stronger more principle centered father and husband…I can’t wait to outgrow my location and be forced to add new classes at the box….and look to move to a larger location….I will see some of my members become certified and start to spread our version of Crossfit/MovNat, so much so that it will begin to permeate all of Buffalo…and start leaking out….I can’t wait for the guidance and inspiration that will come from the Steve Maxwell seminar in April….I am looking forward to the lives that will be changed by not just me, but by all the members of the Box…we have done so much this year and the honest part of it all is that it will only be amplified in 2014…..I am looking forward to changing 10,000 people’s lives…..looking forward to doing a Burpee Mile…looking forward to back to back bar muscle ups…looking forward to feeling the best  I have ever felt in my entire life….I am going to be honest….I cannot wait until this post next year…….I am looking forward to realizing, 51 weeks from now….that all of this is just the tip of the ICEBERG!!!

Thank you all so much…

Good luck to you all……chase your dreams, live well, move well, and fuel well….have a wonderful New Year’s Eve….and prepare yourself for an Epic 2014!!!!

Starbucks encounter..

So there I was.  In line behind someone ordering his wife’s drink off of his cell phone.  Do you know this guy?  Are you this guy?….  At any rate, not only is it taking him hours to read it,  he stresses that it has to be “fat free”   to the poor girl behind the counter(doesn’t he know that he just has to say skinny, never mind that the fat in milk is about the best part about it..not that I am advocating drinking milk, just saying if your are going to you might as well get the fat)  anyhow I digress, he stresses  that the lack of fat is in fact the  “most important part.”   Then as a follow up  says ” Oh and she needs 12 packets of Sugar.”  Holy shit is right...

I was, for once (truthfully only for about 2 seconds), speechless.  I couldn’t believe how much ignorance I had just witnessed in a drink order.

It seems to me that as many people as I think are becoming educated, many are continuing on, doing what they always have done, even though they may, in fact, know better.  I am sure any number of behavioral experts with MD’s and PhD’s could tell me why.  Hell with some not so deep thoughts I could probably come up with the answer, but instead of wasting my brain power on figuring out why so many people tell me they want something, and then all their actions are contrary to what they want…..(post for another day)….instead I am going to leave you with some deep challenging thoughts.

Let’s imagine that you are in your mid 40s to late 50s  and you have children in their 20s or 30s….

Now let’s imagine that they are pushing the obese level..

they come to you and ask for help

What would you do to save your children’s lives????

Take some time and imagine how they will look, and feel, how scared, embarrassed, unhappy they are.  Think carefully about your answer, how are you going to get them to move better, eat better, hell how are you going to get them to live better.  What can you say, how can you make them understand that you care so much about their success…how can you influence them to make that change that you so clearly see they need to make….involve yourself in this imaginary scene.  Hug the huge versions of them, how does it make you feel that they are struggling with this.  Come up with a plan, a solid course of action that you know will not fail….take time, figure it out, even write it down if you like, it will only help the exercise…involve your spouse in this if you have one….even if you don’t have children you can imagine this all….try to make it as real as possible.. now look at how simple that plan is that you thought of, or perhaps wrote down.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY LIVING THE WAY OF THAT PLAN FOR YOURSELF OR/ AND YOUR CHILDREN…..WHY NOT????

5 Aspects of Life One Must Conquer to Achieve Fitness Enlightenment

5 Aspects of Life One Must Conquer to Achieve Fitness Enlightenment

We live in a world full of wonderful technology.  I can pick up a phone not much bigger than my business card and be instantly connected with my pen-pal in china, and not see him while we talk, but see him talking back to me.  Long gone are the days of  truly “waiting” for anything.  We live in a society where convenience seems to be the number one focus in our lives.  Everyone everywhere seem to be searching for the easiest, path of least resistance way, to do absolutely everything.  We all want it faster, better, cheaper, and above all else we want it to work.  I think that there is where the problem may first start to rear it’s ugly head.  What else in our wonderful natural world works like that?  We certainly don’t expect to plant a tree and have it fully grown in a day?   As a matter of fact nothing in the natural world works that way.   Everything takes it’s own turn as part of a natural process.  Bugs get it, animals get it, the oceans, clouds, moon and sun all get it…..us humans on the other hand…we are special.  We have been bred by society, religion, media, and even our government to believe that we are special and the rules of the natural world don’t apply to us. We tend to circumvent natural laws as often as possible.  But the fact is, although we may not want to live by them, they very much govern everything we do.  We are not above “natural law.”  For instance, in any population if you introduce an endless supply of food, the population will grow exponentially.  And we think this is a good thing…..look at our ever-expanding waistline  The good news is there is hope out there.  In this post I will outline a very basic approach to 5 aspects of your life that I believe you need to conquer if you hope to achieve fitness enlightenment. (or at the very least reach you fitness goals)

ASPECT # 1   ATTITUDE:   It’s hard to type briefly on this one (or any of the others for that matter) subject, but I will do my best. But first perhaps I’ll let some that have a bit more life experience under their bit do some talking for me:

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.
Winston Churchill

It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come.
Dalai Lama

Success or failure depends more upon attitude than upon capacity successful men act as though they have accomplished or are enjoying something. Soon it becomes a reality. Act, look, feel successful, conduct yourself accordingly, and you will be amazed at the positive results.
William James

….so after reading such quotes you may naturally ask:  OK, what now?  Well you asked for it.  You have to become aware of your attitude toward you.  Sounds a bit redundant right?  But it’s not.  You, right now, are exactly where you are supposed to be.  You are a direct result of all the beliefs, choices, and events that have led you here.  You can change that.  What you can do is choose to change the direction you are heading.  Look inside yourself.  Listen to the way you talk to yourself about how you look, how you feel, how you eat, how you dream, how you act.  You have to find and identify an negative self talk…any thoughts that allow you to …eat that cheeseburger, or skip that workout, or put off joining that gym this week.  Simply…you attitude toward exercising and eating has put you exactly where you are today.  If you want to be in better shape, the first thing you need to do is decide to be in better shape.

ASPECT #2  ENVIRONMENT:  This refers to everything around you.  Friends, Family, living conditions, work, television, the country, our media…..all of it….if you open your eyes right now and look,,,,,what you see is your environment…..and unfortunately……it’s not pretty.   If you are a fit person in the United States of America you are on the extreme end of the spectrum.   As a matter of fact, we are pushing to the %70 mark in the US.   Seventy Percent of us are either overweight or obese….and for our children the percentage has tripled in the past 15 years.   That means if you open your eyes and ears to what society is screaming at you……if you listen to what the majority of commercials tell you, or what your friends at work say…you will stay the exact same way that you are.  The only way you are going to change is if you turn your boat around and start pedaling against the flow.

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”
Mark Twain

I may take Mr. Twain’s quote and go a bit further…in terms of fitness and nutrition…..instead of pausing and reflecting…I recommend you  run like hell in the other direction….The bottom line is you, as a human being, are going to act, think, reflect, the values of the environment that you are in.  So…to change your life, change your environment.   More on that in the week, book, years to come.   Perhaps the biggest point to walk away from today, in regards to environment, is do not underestimate how important it is to be aware of how it can either enhance, or can crush your attempts to get/ stay in shape.

ASPECT # 3 TIME MANAGEMENT:   I’ll begin by saying this.  I am a father of two, a husband of one, have a full time job, run a business, and teach group exercises classes at a local gym.   Impossible to just accidentally accomplish everything that I have to accomplish everyday.  If I can find the time to train for a marathon…you can find 3o mins a day to get you to your fitness goal.   The bottom line is that you have to plan for it though.  Trust me on this.  No one has ever accidentally got in shape.  ”My goodness….I woke up the other day and out of nowhere, I had a six pack of abs and I could run a mile in under five minutes”   Trust me  this doesn’t happen.   What has to happen if you expect to get in shape is you have to make time for it in your schedule….and it has to take priority.  The said truth is most americans take better care of their cars than they do their bodies……here is a time management page stolen directly from a Sales Mentor of mine Chet Holmes:

Commit to these six steps
Six proactive steps to time management can transform your day. They take five minutes to do and can double the amount of results you get daily. The problem is not whether or not these steps will work, because they will absolutely work. The problem is whether or not you will fully commit to doing them, repeatedly.
The key to time management is commitment to the following six steps:
Step One: Touch it once
How often do you pick up something on your desk and say, “I have to take care of this, but I can’t deal with it right now”? If you do that a few times per day with a few different documents/projects/tasks, by the end of the year, you will have spent an entire month touching and rereading information without taking action. So, if you touch it, move it to the next step.
If you want to see how often you waste time, each time you pick up something, put a red dot on it. After you have three red dots on a piece of paper, you begin to feel pressure to do something and move on. If you touch it, take care of it.
Step Two: Make lists, but stick to the six most important things
When we conduct this time management seminar, we ask how many people in the audience make lists. Practically everyone does. People often have lists with 25 to as many as 40 items on them. They are proud that their lists are so long and that they are so busy.
Further investigation quickly shows them that long lists are the perfect way to be busy, but not productive. When you have a long list, your energy is focused more on trimming the list than it is on being productive. Each day, pick the six items that will produce the highest level of results, put them on your list, and finish all six things by day’s end.
Step Three: Plan how long you will spend on each item
You’ve started your day by making a list of the six most important things. That took two or three minutes. Now take another minute to plan how long each item will take or how long you will dedicate to the items that are ongoing.
When we conduct this workshop, the people with long lists usually find that they can have an incredibly productive day with only six hours spent on their six key items. Most people who use these steps find they get more important work done in less time because their time is focused on the most productive tasks.
Step Four: Plan when
Now that you know how much time to dedicate to each task, you need to plan when you will do them. In addition, you must build in time for the reactive mode.
For example, if you are a sales manager interrupted by frequent “got a minute” meetings, plan a fixed time when you will accept those types of meetings. Otherwise, unless it is an emergency, do not allow people to come to your desk and ask if you’ve got a minute!
Think of any top executive you know. Can you simply call them up, or do you have to schedule time with them? Many top executives plan their day down to the minute. Everything is done according to a schedule, including time for “got a minute” meetings. Scheduling time is the key to time management.
Step Five: Ask the results
Few people are highly productive. People like to have items on a list, so they can cross off the items. But that’s not enough. The things that produce the best results are generally the most difficult. Thus, they get left off of the list or are scheduled at the end of the day, causing them to get bumped to the next day…and the next…and the next.
Schedule important tasks in the beginning of your day. Cold calling or trying to get appointments with key prospects or clients are the things that produce the best results. However, they often get pushed off by average salespeople. After you make your list, ask yourself if the items on it are the ones that will produce the most results.
Step Six: Will it hurt me to throw this away?
Of all filed information, 80% is never referred to again. After hearing this time management idea, I began to throw away four out of five of the items I used to keep. It’s been 10 years, and I cannot think of a single time where it has hurt me
Using those steps should help with not only work, but also may get us in the proper mindset of planning out our lives, not to mention our workouts.
ASPECT #4  NUTRITION:    I’m going to make this one simple.Eat none of the following:

  • Grains–including bread, pasta, noodles
  • Beans–including string beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, peas
  • Potatoes
  • Dairy products
  • Sugar
From here on…now you are wondering what you can eat right??????
  • Meat, chicken, and fish
  • Eggs
  • Fruit–especially berries
  • Vegetables–especially root vegetables, but not potatoes or sweet potatoes
  • Nuts–almonds, macadamias, walnuts, brazil nuts. Do not eat peanuts.
There…if you are wondering why…the why is for another time…for now…there it is….simple and to the point…take it or leave it..
ASPECT #5  MOVEMENT:  It’s listed last, because in my experience, it is the least important.  If the other four are aligned correctly  then number five simply falls naturally into place.  If you have the right attitude, are surrounded by the right environment, have planned out and organized your life, and are eating the way you were designed to, you workouts not only will work, but they will be part of your life, which is the point.  We, as a species, are meant to move.  We are mobile beings.  We are not supposed to spend 8-10 hours of our day sitting on our asses…..I think that there is a very primal reason that no matter how hard you workout, afterwards there is a very good feeling.  So I care not what you do to workout.  Sure I would like you to do some sort of functional, crossfit like workout that would incorporate basic movements, and would ultimately lead you to feeling better, looking better, and moving better.  Truth be told though, let’s at first work on consistency.  Step 1, in Movement is to   MOVE!!!!!  Spend 30-45 minutes everyday doing something that makes you sweat,,,,from there we will talk again……
In summary….if you can master those 5 simple concepts I firmly believe you will be successful, not only in your fitness endeavors but in life as well.
thanks for your time Buffalo..
